Database terminology

Before starting to learn Access a knowledge of the terms in essential.

Database
A database is a collection of related data.
Examples of databases are client list, employee list and information, inventory, and students information.

Record
A record is one item in that database.
Each employee and their information is one record.
You in a telephone book is one record.
Each inventory item is a record.
If the database is listed in table format then each row of the table is a record.

Field
A field in a database is the information we store for each record.
Examples of fields in an employee database would be:
    Employee Name
    SIN
    Home Phone Number
    Cell Phone Number
    Address
    City
    Province/State
    Pay
If the database is listed in table format then each column of the table is a field.
